Five Minute Friday: Opportunity

5 min Friday

I live in Central Oregon.  That means it doesn’t really rain here.  It’s the High Desert and we get a lot of sun, wind, snow, heat, and everything else you get in the desert, including jack rabbits and antelope.  I live in the city but if you drive north on the highway just a ways you will find yourself in the middle of nowhere.  No trees, no mountains, just rises in the land and sagebrush and crop fields as far as the eye can see.  It doesn’t seem like there is much opportunity out there but that’s not true.  If you keep driving, past one tumble weed and then another and you have a little patience, you will come to some hamlets.  Grass Valley.  Moro.  Towns that are a throw back to the old west.  A place where people decided to stop their wagons and make a go of it.  Today they aren’t much, but they sure are lovely little oases in the wide open plains.  But you have to keep going.  Keep driving.  The road will begin to dip down, between small cliffs that get higher and higher.  Down, down, down.  Keep driving.  Opportunity is coming.  At the end of the road.  There it is, the Mighty Columbia.  A river that flows for hundreds of miles.  Wide and blue and flowing. Ever flowing.  This was unimaginable when you left my town.  But now, here it is.  The blue-byway to the sea.  Opportunity.

Debi, that’s beautiful! I took my kids this past summer to Oregon on vacation. We had a wonderful time! It was only the second time that my kids have seen mountains. God’s creation is so amazing!

  2. I LOVE this! (Quite possibly because I too live in desert lands… I am in Yakima – on the other side of the mighty Columbia!) Just a few months ago – when going to Walla Walla to visit family, my hubby and I got to talking and for the first time ever we missed our turn off. We ended up driving along the Columbia on the Oregon side and wow – I was so sad that I had forgotten my camera! I will get ‘lost’ on purpose again soon… with camera in hand! Great post! So often – we don’t see the opportunities around us… but if we just keep going, they come Mightily into view!

  3. Thank you for stopping by today!

You make me want to come visit… maybe someday I’ll get that opportunity! :)
